Robert Pattinson keeps lips sealed over Kristen Stewart affair in first awkward interview as he giggles into ice-cream
R-Patz seemed thrown by the question, claiming: 'I thought we'd already prepared this. I had a joke prepared! I was all set up and ready to go. Now it's meaningless.'
But Jon jumped in with a tub of ice-cream, in a bid to mimic a girly gossiping session, saying: 'We're just a couple of gals talking.'
Can the ground swallow me please? Robert tried to avoid question on K-Stew while eating his ice-cream
Still unsure how to act, Robert continued: 'This is how you got me on the show... This is the problem with actors, in every awkward interview situation... '
He soon tails off as Jon rescues him by diving in with a joke about the melting ice-cream tubs: 'Here's the problem with my show, we don't have a freezer!'
Back on track, Robert faffs around with his spoon, saying: 'I'm trying not to eat this as I'm going to split my spanx. I'm double spanxed!'
Back on track: R-Patz made his first red carpet appearance tonight at the New York premiere of Cosmopolis
After a few laughs from the audience, Jon steered the conversation back around, saying: 'So what are we doing here? I'm worried about you. Are you alright?'
Pattinson immediately deflected the question, referencing his melted ice-cream: 'I literally don't know how to approach this now.'
Happier times: The couple met on the set of Twilight
He continued: 'This is the weird things about these interviews, and now I'm going to sound like an idiot, but my biggest problem in my life is that I'm cheap.
'I didn't hire a publicist and every awkward interview, most actors have things scripted. I'm going to hire a publicist.'
Trying to bring the chatter around to Kristen again, Jon teased: 'The last time I had a bad break-up, Ben & Jerry's got me through the tough times, so I thought you and I could talk about things?'
Putting on a camp voice, he then joked: 'Boy, you are better off without... so kick her to the curb!'
Robert couldn't resist a giggle, but remained looking at his ice-cream before taking an awkward bite and looking up at Jon.
But the star of the vampire franchise then broke the ice, asking: 'Was that an impression of yourself?'
To which Jon replied, 'That was me at 17 through to 38.' He continued: 'When you are young and you break-up, it feels like the world is ending but this is the first time I have actually seen the world react that way. It's insanity!
'So here is my wish for you, that you get to handle your business in your personal life and I wish you all the best.'
Can I go home now? Robert pulled a variety of facial expressions, but gave little away during the interview
Poker face: Robert didn't articulate if he is still with Kirsten or not
While Jon was clearly desperate for a lifeline or exclusive quote, Robert remained poker-faced and revealed nothing about the status of his relationship.
They then briefly discussed R-Patz's new film Cosmopolis, after which Jon offered the 26-year-old a chance for the final word, but jested that viewers had left to make a sandwich after the pair switched the topic of conversation from K-Stew to movie talk.
At that moment, it seemed as though Robert was to spill the beans, as he teased: 'There is one thing... '
However, he proceeded to talk about his upcoming film, saying: 'If any Twilight fans are tuning in, I genuinely want to make Cosmopolis have a higher opening weekend than The Dark Knight (Rises).
'But it's only released in six cinemas so it's going to be a challenge. Just buy eight tickets each!'

Can they last? Liberty Ross is said to have sought advice from lawyers since Rupert Sanders' infidelities
It seems he was referencing the demise of Hollywood's golden couple, who are the Brangelina of their generation for pre-teens and twentysomethings.
The reason for Robert's return to the spotlight so soon after the scandal is to promote his new leading man role in David Cronenberg's thriller Cosmopolis.
Three weeks ago, pictures of K-Stew emerged in the arms of her Snow White And The Huntsman director Rupert Sanders. The 41-year-old has two children with wife and British model Liberty Ross.
